Free Tableware
Most people go through several sets of tableware during their lifetime. It is not unusal to find homes with sets of everyday dishes, company dinnerware, special holiday themed dishes, fun casual outdoor dishes for poolside and barbecue, special tableware for ethnic or religious reasons. It is usually very easy to get free tableware - especially if you are willing to mix and match.
Let family, friends, and coworkers know what you need. Grandma may be thrilled to learn you'll treasure the antiques she got from her mother. Your friends may volunteer to throw a housewarming or shower to fill your shelves. A sign up on your office bulletin board may find you gifted with a large box of dishes that no longer match when your boss redecorates their home.
Put an ad on Freecycle. Freecycle is a a grassroots, nonprofit group that strives to keep useful items out of landfills. You can place a notice on their site requesting a donation, and in turn when you have extra or unneeded but still good "stuff" you can offer it to other members.
Watch the Free category on Craigslist. Place a notice in the Wanted section asking for free tableware. If you have something to trade for tableware, the Barter forum may be for you. Drop an email to people who advertise dishes and serving pieces for sale at their Garage Sales, and offer to pick up anything that doesn't sell if they are willing to donate it at the end of their sale.
